Specialized Student Support Lead (SSSL)
Avril Morton has been with the NYC Department of Education for 13 years. Her journey as an educator began in 2008 as a District 12 elementary Special Education teacher in the Bronx. For 11 years in this role her invaluable contributions to the School Implementation Team (SIT), Response to Intervention team (RTI), and Curriculum Mapping Team were evident in her skillful targeted instruction to students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs); provision of dynamic and informative professional learning opportunities and exemplary consultation to school staff regarding evidence-based reading and behavior management strategies. Thus, making her an integral member of the school community.
Her journey continued in 2019 when she joined Queens South D28 team, as an Educational Administrator in the role of Specialized Student Support Lead (SSSL). In which she coached and collaborated with teachers to promote and utilize best practices and data sources to improve students’ achievement. She has served as an indispensable resource to building administrators, teachers, and parents–not only within the area of instruction and the core curriculum - but also within the area of the special education services, the IEP process, and related services mandates.
Her leadership abilities coupled with her pedagogical expertise actively strengthens and supports family involvement, mobilizing school and community partnerships.
