Lenia Matías

Before joining Community School District 28, Lenia served as Instructional Lead for Queens South schools. Prior to this role, she coached school leaders to advance equitable and culturally responsive education in the Bronx. Lenia was a Teacher Development and Evaluation Coach, throughout New York City, and the founding principal of Primary School 280, in Jackson Heights. Since starting her career in 2003, as a New York City Teaching Fellow, Lenia taught and coordinated transitional bilingual and dual language programs, Advancement Via Individual Determination, humanities, and foreign language. She is an ardent supporter of the arts in education, project based learning, and education for liberation.

Lenia holds a B.A. in International Relations from Brown University, an M.A. in bilingual education from Pace University, and an M.A. in school leadership from New York University, along with professional certificates from Bank Street's Bilingual/ESL Teacher Leadership Academy, The NYC Leadership Academy, Advanced Leadership Institute, and Harvard's School of Education. Lenia lives in Locust Valley with her mother, Carmen, her husband, Serkan, and her daughter, Havana.
