Dr. Pate

Dear District 28 Families, Students, and Community Members,

Welcome to the 2026-2027 School Year!

Whether you are returning to one of our schools or joining District 28 for the first time, it is my pleasure to welcome you to a new school year filled with promise, opportunity, and growth. The beginning of each school year offers a fresh start and a renewed commitment to ensuring that every student thrives academically, socially, and emotionally.

This year's District 28 theme, "Rooted in Purpose, Rising in Impact," reflects our collective commitment to creating learning environments where every student feels safe, supported, challenged, and empowered to reach their fullest potential. Together, we will continue building on our strengths while embracing new opportunities to elevate student achievement and well-being across our district.

Our Priorities for 2026-2027

This year, our work will focus on four key priorities:

Literacy Excellence through NYC Reads

We are committed to ensuring that all students develop strong reading, writing, speaking, and communication skills that serve as the foundation for lifelong learning and success.

Mathematics Achievement through NYC Solves

We will continue strengthening mathematics instruction so that students become confident problem-solvers, critical thinkers, and effective collaborators.

Preparing Students for the Future

Through career-connected learning, civic engagement, financial literacy, and real-world experiences, we will help students develop the knowledge, skills, and mindsets needed to succeed in college, careers, and life.

Family and Community Partnerships

Student success is strongest when schools and families work together. We will continue to foster meaningful partnerships that support student achievement and strengthen our school communities.

In addition, we remain committed to improving student attendance across the district. Every day counts. Consistent attendance is one of the strongest indicators of academic success, and we encourage families to work closely with schools to ensure students are present, engaged, and ready to learn each day.

Supporting Healthy and Purposeful Technology Use

This year, New York City Public Schools has introduced updated guidance regarding artificial intelligence (AI) and student screen time. For students in grades K-8, student-facing generative AI tools will not be used during the 2026-2027 school year. Schools will also be more intentional in balancing technology use with opportunities for reading, writing, discussion, collaboration, hands-on learning, the arts, physical activity, and social interaction.

District 28 fully supports this balanced approach. We believe technology should enhance learning while preserving the meaningful human connections and experiences that are essential to student growth and development.

Get Involved We encourage every family to take an active role in our school communities. There are many ways to engage and make a difference, including:

  • Joining your school's Parent Association (PA) or Parent-Teacher Association (PTA)
  • Serving on your School Leadership Team (SLT)
  • Attending Community Education Council 28 (CEC 28) meetings
  • Participating in family workshops, school events, and volunteer opportunities

Your voice, partnership, and leadership are invaluable. Together, we can create strong, supportive learning communities where all students can flourish.

Looking Ahead

Thank you for your continued trust, partnership, and commitment to the children of District 28. As we begin this new school year, I am filled with optimism about what we can accomplish together. By remaining rooted in our purpose and focused on making a meaningful impact, we will ensure that every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve at the highest levels.

On behalf of the entire District 28 team, I wish you and your family a successful, joyful, and rewarding school year.

Warm regards,

Dr. Eric E. Blake
